"They're tyrin' to wash us away" とは突き放した言い回しだけれど，ランディ・ニューマンは彼のスタイルとして客観的な視線を弱者に向け，その状況を浮き立たす詞を書いてきたのだ。
ここで洪水に翻弄される人々と対比されるのは，大統領の愚かな有り様だ。
エアロンの歌はいささか感動的すぎるけれど，作者が込めた皮肉を強調するための手法なのかもしれない。
合衆国史上最大の洪水被害が "人災"面で引き合いに出されるのは，事前の対策不足ゆえのこと。
東日本大震災の場合の"人災"とは，事後２ヶ月以上経つ現在進行の"政府の無策"にほかならない。
