「エレファントオーキッド」は、

タイとその周辺諸国の河畔林や湿地林、そして

インドネシアとニューギニアの熱帯雨林に自生しています。

タイでは野生では絶滅したという説もあります。

樹木に着生する着生ランとして、

あるいは湿地や岩場に生育します。

オーキッドアークへの多くの寄付のおかげで、

ドクマイガーデンでは5年ものの

エレファントオーキッドを来園者の皆様に展示しています。

3月から始まったお祭り、"ミス・ユニバース・フィリピン2026"選考会は 

5/2の大会でクィーンが決まるらしいが、

50余名の各地から出場した候補者は4/27、10名に絞り込まれ、

マウンテン州代表 リネリーはそこに残った。

まあ、そこまでだったようだが。

さて、4月上旬に公開された約5分のビデオクリップが、

ボクの目を惹いたのである。

棚田のロケ地は マリコン棚田。

リネリーが登る松林は、

マリコン棚田を見下ろす ファト Mt. Fatoの登山道。

フィリピンで最も高く、長い吊り橋は、

サダンガのナベンガン橋（Nabenngan Bridge）。

夕日に輝くのは グワアン池 Gawa-an Lakeと

向こうの尖った山は マガオ山 Mt. Mogao (タディアン)。

このランは、タイ、ミャンマー、ラオス、ベトナム、

雲南省の低地にあった（現在は絶滅した）原生常緑樹林に自生していました。

他の多くのモンスーン性デンドロビウムと同様に、

乾季には休眠期を必要とします。

ドクマイガーデンには受粉媒介者がいないようで、

花粉塊が消えているのを確認できるにもかかわらず、

実がなりません。

これは、形が違う別の昆虫が訪れたせいかもしれませんし、

あるいはランが他家受粉を必要としているのかもしれません。

今日、手で受粉を試みたところ、

花が非常に硬いことに気づきました。

茶色と縞模様のある唇弁は、まるで動物の顎のように、

受粉のためには無理やり開けなければなりません。

オス1匹が、咲きはじめのエンゴサクにやってきて

クモの巣に捕らわれた。

しばし暴れた末に、脱出していった。

向こうの杉の林縁にふわりとチョウが見え、

探すと、新鮮なメスがいた。

今日はじめて見るヒメカンアオイは

6畳ほどの広さに密生していた。

この地域の葉は斑入りが普通である。

戻ってきたメスが新芽を探して転々と飛ぶが、

全く落ち着かない。

表面上はボクは見つけられなかった。

木漏れ日が当たらない地表は日陰の世界だ。

脚で触れて古葉と分かる?と

離れる、その繰り返し。

ときどき休む。

やがて梢に舞い上がっていった。
