On this last day of the year all of a family sweep and clean their house, housewives cook for the New Year, merchants pay off their debts,if any, and many people eat soba (the buckwheat noodles) to pray for good luck and listen to the 108 peals of the temple bells rung in the Buddhist temples at midnight.
