近年高付加価値な「クラフトチョコレート（Bean to Bar）」の
産地として急速に注目されています。
北部のチェンマイやナーン県、南部のチュンポン県などを中心に生産され、
国際的な賞を受賞するブランドも登場しており、
お土産やギフトとしても非常に人気が高まっています。

アーモンドのような種子（「豆」）を持つカカオ
（アオイ科）は、南米の熱帯雨林の植物です。

ある日、チェンマイ北部のメージョーにある農業大学へ
車で向かった帰途、果樹園を通り過ぎた時、
ふと左を見てブレーキをかけました。一体何が！？
太陽の光を浴びて、実をたっぷりつけた、完熟したカカオの木が！
信じられませんでしたが、タイの果樹園学者によると、
フォラステロという特別な品種が選抜され、
太陽の光を浴びて育つようになったそうです。
苗木をいくつか手に入れました。念のため、木は日陰に植えました。
毎日水やりをしています。これが1年前のことです。
今から6月ですが、小さな木のうち2本がすでに花を咲かせています。

「クルアス・タニー・タム」は本来の野生バナナの一種である。
食用として最も市場に出回っているバナナの
親バナナの片一方である。
もう片方のミバショウのように、この種も
夜間にフルーツコウモリによって受粉される。
どちらの種も東南アジアが原産である。
この二つの種のバナナを最初に評したイタリア人植物学者
Luigi Aloysius Colla(1766-1848)に敬意を表して、
私たちは(Dokmai gardenで飼う)雄水牛に「Colla」と名前をつけた。
Colla は大きくなり過ぎて売却された由。
この雄牛の名前は "Poi Fai"とか。
"ドクマイ"(タイ語:花)園内の植物のいくつかには
説明のプレートが立っていて
英語/日本語/タイ語で書いてあった。
日本語訳は分類の専門家ではない日本人に
依頼したのかも、と感じる。

直径20cm未満のボール状の巣の外皮を割り、
天井の細い支柱に下向きについていた2層からなる巣盤
(2層目は1層目よりずっと小さい)を外して、
そこに置いてみた。

砂糖を加えて煮こんだり、汁物に入れる。
タイでは果樹園でなく家庭菜園で庭に植えられる。
