当日，当時のことはよく覚えている。
イングランドの友人がすぐに，新聞の切り抜きを送ってくれた。
D・S・T・Y の花文字に飾られた棺をのせたガラス張りの二頭立て馬車の写真がある，葬送のようすを伝える記事。
正確かどうかは知らないけれど，ボクは勝手にこう捉えていた。
1970年代以降，酒やドラッグ(さらにはセックスという噂も)に溺れた彼女を母国のメディアは容赦なく叩いた。
リハビリに務めていると報じられる頃には，同性愛者グループのシンボルの一人として名前が挙がるなどして，さらに世間は冷たくなり，彼女も又，祖国に背を向けるように米国西海岸に移り住み，活動をした。
やがて，1988年にイングランドに戻って精力的に活動を再開するも，彼女に対する視線は依然として冷たいものだった。
そして，ガラス張りの馬車によるバレードへと画面が変わるのだ。
彼女が祖国に心から許された，その日へと。
惜別の悲しみからではなく，彼女と祖国の和解に，ボクは心を熱くしたのだ。
動画を見て，まるで，昨日のことのように今，思い起こしている。
